BRAWLEY, Imperial County — October 27, 2026. Parents and drivers know that school dismissal can produce confusing movements around intersections. The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) used a temporary street-design demonstration at Witter Elementary School as part of its regional Planning for Main Streets effort.
What was scheduled?
The official SCAG notice invited residents to a pop-up workshop on Friday, October 23, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Witter Elementary School, Brawley Avenue and K Street. The purpose was to hear questions and ideas about improving traffic safety, walking routes and a corridor where State Route 86 also functions as a neighborhood main street.
What could the plan change?
Participants were invited to consider possible street safety, mobility and placemaking improvements. In practice, concepts might involve safer pedestrian crossings, clearer driver behavior and better connections between schools, nearby businesses and neighborhoods. However, a pop-up demonstration is not an adopted construction project, and the workshop notice does not identify a final design, allocated construction contract or any safety result.
The October 23 session has passed. Residents can request information about the feedback collected and when project alternatives may return for public review.
